Duck Decoy Pond Spread – Pond Buster

Ready for a tip on duck hunting? Perfect!

Today I want to share with you one of the most common ways that I hunt for ducks with plenty of success, especially on duck hunting opener.  I like to call this duck decoy spread strategy the “Pond Buster”.  The reason is this setup works well for hunting smaller bodies of water such as a pond.

What is the situation?
Well my father in law has land that borders a small river and the neat thing is that in one spot of this river the water backs up into a small pond.  I often go hunting there with my brother in law and a few of our best hunting buddies.  What is neat about this setup is that since the pond is so small it requires very few decoys to harvest ducks.

What is the decoy setup?
In the duck decoy pond spread diagram below you can see that I am standing on the side of the pond and using some natural coverings to help keep me concealed from approaching ducks. What we do is put 3 or 4 groups of decoys to create some duck family/mating groups on the pond. However, we are sure to leave a large opening in the middle for the ducks to land.

What are the benefits of this duck decoy pond spread setup?
One of the best benefits of the “Pond Buster” is that it requires very few decoys.  In this image I show just over 1 dozen decoys but we have had luck with this with as few as 3-6 decoys.  Remember that when you are hunting a small body of water that you need to leave plenty of room for the ducks to land.  If we put more decoys out there would be no spot for the ducks to land so they would likely feel crowded and they would fly away.

“Pond Buster Benefits”

  • Few decoys required, can be accomplished with 3-12 decoys
  • Can use natural covering as concealment
  • Easy to tell when ducks are in shotgun range, once they are above the pond they should be in shooting distance
  • Use pods f 3-4 decoys in several places in the pond.

This is just one way you can try placing your duck decoys in a pond the next time you hunt to see what type of success it produces for you in your hunting area.

Scott, looks good.do you have anything on field hunting with about 4 dozen shells.I pretty much hunt alone and put out my spread.I have a coffin blind and I’m still working on getting better at calling. They are a very vocal critter and the call can do wonders if used right.

Scott,I wanted to mention that I just have a Trac phone which I don’t think I can download some of your products to.Is there any way I can just download on my desk computer,as I do have a printer. Also,I tried to put your web site in my “favorites”,but it would not go through. I must admit,I am not computer literate,so some of this stuff is really quite foreign to me.Thanks, anyway
