“Mini” decoy spread for ringneck ducks Summary:

  • This spread can work great with magnum or super-mag decoys
  • I typically use bluebill and ringneck decoys spaced 6-12 feet apart
  • It is best to anchor lines at both ends to ensure that the 90 degree angle is maintained
  • With a shoreline version, a slightly less than 90 degree angle can be used if needed

The “Mini” rig is somewhat unorthodox.  It is however, a valuable spread to have in your bag of tricks when hunting small water, hunting with a minimal spread or solo hunts.  Especially effective for ringneck ducks utilizing northern shield, marsh or bog lakes.

The spread consists of only 24-30 decoys split in two groups of 12-15 gang lined on the two lines.

The blind should be placed at the apex or junction of the two perpendicular lines at a 90 degree angle.

The mini spread can make for extremely fast and fun shooting as divers will barrel down the line parallel to the wind, then slam on the breaks to land with the decoys running perpendicular to the wind.  The perpendicular line effectively works as a stopping.

This decoy spread and commentary was provided by Jeff Taege at Hoduck Decoy Company.
